Palauan presidential election, 2008

The Palauan presidential election will be held as part of the general elections on 4 November 2008. Incumbent President Tommy Remengesau is term limited and will therefore not be seeking re-election.

Outgoing President Tommy Remengesau has announced that he will run for a seat in the Senate of Palau.

Candidates for President

There are currently four candidates running for President of Palau. The field will be narrowed to just two candidates on the presidential primary election which is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, September 23, 2008. The two primary winners will face off aganist each other on the general election date of November 4, 2008.

The current Presidential and Vice Presidential candidates are:

*Palau Senate President Surangel Whipps is running with Billy Kuartei. Kuartei is the current chief of staff for President Tommy Remengesau.
*The current Palauan ambassador to Taiwan, Johnson Toribiong, an attorney, is running with Delegate Kerai Mariur.
*The incumbent Vice President of Palau Elias Camsek Chin is seeking a promotion to the Palauan presidency. His running mate is Senator Alan Seid.
*Senator Joshua Koshiba is running for President with Peleliu Governor Jackson Ngiraingas for Vice President.

Campaigning

All four presidential candidates and their running mates have held rallies throughout Palau. Campaigning has also taken place within overseas Palauan communities in the mainland United States, Hawaii, Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands, including Saipan.
