- Jay S. McMullan
Jay Scott McMullan, born October 25, 1959, Texas, is an American minister, photographer and musician.
Jay was born in Shamrock, Texas to Jack M. McMullan and Glenna Vitato McMullan. Jay had two brothers, David McMullan (12/4/1956 to 8/3/1978) and Kerry McMullan (4/28/1962). David died from cancer in Spearman, Texas in 1978.
Early
The first five years of Jay's life were spent three blocks from the famous Route 66 in Erick, Oklahoma. Sayre, Oklahoma was Jay's home for two years until Jay was seven years old. His mother went to Southwestern State University in Weatherford, Oklahoma and earned a bachelor's degree and teaching certificate. Jay's father, a painting contractor, moved the family to Spearman, Texas where Jay's mother taught school for a number of years. Jay graduated high school at Spearman Senior High.
On Jay's eighteenth birthday, he began work with General Telephone out of Perryton, Texas. For one year, he worked throughout the Texas and Oklahoma panhandles and northwestern Oklahoma as a telephone lineman. Later, he transferred to a cable splicer job with GTE.
In August 1978, Jay married Pamela Flowers of Perryton, Texas. Jay and his wife lived in Perryton, Texas and later in Spearman, Texas where they had two children, Eric and Kimberly. In 1984, Jay and his family moved to Broken Arrow, Oklahoma where he attended Rhema Bible Training Center.
Ministry Years
After graduating from the "Pastors Group" at Rhema Bible Training Center, Jay took the position of senior pastor at Faith Christian Fellowship in Lamar, Colorado. After sometime, the name of the church was changed to Family Worship Center of Lamar, Colorado. Jay later took the senior pastor position at Living Water Church in Cuero, Texas. It was during the time in Cuero, Texas that Jay began to play guitar and he led singing during the church services.
In 1988, Jay left the ministry and his family moved to Alvin, Texas where he worked for Amoco Oil Company. In 1993, a job position came open in Amoco's refinery in Salt Lake City. Jay applied for the position and was accepted. He and his family moved to Salt Lake City in June 1993.
Photography
In 1978, Jay bought his first 35mm camera after seeing a friend's photographs. It wasn't long before he bought his first professional medium format camera and began photographing weddings. He also did all of the crime scene photography for the Hansford County, Texas Sheriff's Department. This turned into a lucrative business until he left to attend Bible college in Oklahoma. While in Bible college, Jay worked for the Broken Arrow, Oklahoma police department. He was responsible for setting up a photo lab and working in the jail. Jay continued to photograph weddings and portraits during this time. After moving to the Houston area in 1988, Jay began shooting fashion photography. After moving to Utah in 1993, Jay began photographing fine art landscapes and wildlife and continues to do so. He held numerous, free, "Photo Tours" where photographers from around the country could join him in some of the most unique and beautiful spots around the western United States to photograph landscapes. His photography has won numerous awards.
Singing and Songwriting
Jay's extended family is rich in musical abilities. His great aunt Agnes Francis played piano and organ. Her daughter, Norma Smotherman, his mother's first cousin, plays piano and other musical instruments. Norma's son, Micheal Smotherman is a professional musician and songwriter. Micheal has played keyboards for Roger Miller, Glenn Campbell, Fleetwood Mac and many others. His songs have been recorded by Brookes and Dunn, Ray Charles, Bonnie Raitte, Luther Vandross, Trace Adkins and many more famous musicians. Jay is also related, by marriage, to famous songwriter, Jimmy Webb, author of hits such as "Up, Up and Away", "Galveston", "Wichita Lineman" and "MacAurther Park".
Jay's song, "Lady in That Long Black Dress" is included on Quickstar Production's "Chill Out; An Acoustic Compilation" Volume No. 19 cd which came out in the summer of 2008.
In 2006 Jay began writing songs. Jay's music is described as Americana and includes country music and pop music styled songs. At the time of this writing (September 2008) he is planning on relocating to Orlando, Florida to pursue his musical career.
