Mds – Corretor de Seguros is an insurance broker, leader of the Portuguese insurance brokerage market. The company was founded in 1984 to manage the Sonae Group’s insurances and risk policy, but became autonomous and spread its action to several economical sectors and countries all over the world.

Mds – Corretor de Seguros, S.A. is leaded by José Manuel Dias da Fonseca (CEO). Along with Lazam-Mds, Cooper Gay, SonaeRE and Seguros Continente, it is part of the holding mds - SGPS, SA.

History

1984 –mds was created to manage Sonae’s Insurances.

1987 – mds became an anonymous society. The company’s name changed to mds – Corretor de Seguros, SA. 1997 – The action range of the company was extended to the “non-Sonae” market. By this time, mds had gathered 75% of the clients that possesses nowadays. It was also created the Risk Management Department; a team specialized in consultancy at risk management.

2000 – Sonae Re, a reinsurer of the Sonae Group is founded. It was also established a partnership with Lazam, an important Brazilian broker, which allowed mds to enter the Brazilian insurance brokerage market.

2002 – It was established a joint-venture with Group Suzano, in Brasil, creating Lazam-mds. Nowadays, Lazam-mds is the 3rd biggest broker of Brazil. 2004 – Brokers Link was created. Ever since it was founded, Brokers Link has been collecting important brokers from the main countries of various continents.

2005 – The totality of the Unibroker’s and Becim’s capital, which belonged to Amorim Group, was acquired by mds. With this acquisition, mds became leader of the insurance broker market in Portugal.

2007 – mds acquired a share of 14% of Cooper Gay, with option of increasing up to 28%. Cooper Gay is the 6th biggest insurance broker of the world.

2008 – The Heath Lambert Group’s division of aviation, reinsurance and wholesale was acquiredby Cooper Gay, of which mds holds a share of 14%. This operation implied the transfer of 70 professionals of Heath Lambert to the insurance broker’s universe.
