Knockout Theory is a punk rock band, formed in 2007, from Flemington, New Jersey. While rooted in the punk genre, their music covers subgenres ranging from alternative rock to melodic hardcore.

Band history

Pre-Formation (2003-2006)

The members of Knockout Theory began in separate projects. In 2003, Brian Strelko and Jeff Hersch formed two different bands; Hersch formed the pop-punk quartet "Dewey" with future Knockout Theory lead guitarist Derek Munro, while Strelko founded the alternative/punk trio Malignant, later to be known as Red Tag Special. Mike Carbone later found his way into the local act known as 40 Thousand Canadians. All three of these bands were mediocre first-projects that most pre-teens start out with. Strelko and Hersch were local music rivals only until the formation of Knockout Theory in 2007. While Dewey prevailed until 2006, Red Tag Special ended in 2004 after releasing its first self-titled full-length album. Strelko then started the band Merovenge, which produced only one studio EP, entitled "Consider Yourself Warned". Strelko tried his luck again, this time forming the slightly more successful experimental punk group, Makeshift Alchemy. Finally, after much frustration with non-dedicated and undriven band members, Hersch and Strelko decided to join forces and start Knockout Theory.

Knockout Theory (2007)

The band, which also incorporated the prodigious Derek Munro from Hersch's former band on lead guitar, sought out Mike Carbone to play drums. Carbone, looking to leave his current band, quickly agreed. In August 2007, Knockout Theory recorded their Self-Titled EP in Strelko's basement studio, releasing only 100 original copies.

(Late 2007-2008)

In this period, Knockout Theory became a fully-fledged rock group, often playing 5 or more shows a month while still in High School. In 2008, Knockout Theory recorded and released their first full-length album, "Killing the Past" with producer Dan Skye. The album received sufficient radio and press coverage, but hit record sales in Japan. Later in 2008, the group recorded a punk cover of HSM's "Bop to the Top" for the upcoming compilation "High School Musical Goes Punk". Knockout Theory is also scheduled to appear on FOX/ABC's syndicated television program "Fearless Music" sometime in late 2008 or early 2009.
