Founded in 1917 as a federal school then bought by the county in 1923, Nitro is the oldest and best (academically) high school in Kanawha County.

Nitro High School Marching Band (15 Members) is one of the eight public high schools in Kanawha County that compete in the Daily Mail Kanawha County Majorette and Band Festival. Their band director, Richard Brooks, was voted the Prettiest Band Director of 2011. They have won the Festival Grand Championship three times (1976, 2001, and 2003) and have had two girls named Miss Kanawha Majorette (Frances Snyder in 1956 and Judy Boggess in 1971).
