Rand is a small village in the
West Lindsey district ofLincolnshire , England, appx convert|9|mi|km|0 north east of the city of Lincoln and appx convert|2|mi|km|0 west ofWragby , just off theA158 road from Lincoln toSkegness in the East Midlands region.The name derives from the
Old English " 'Rand' ", meaning " 'a place at the border or edge' ". It appeared in the 1086Domesday Book as " 'Rande' ".James Harrington or Harington the author of " 'Oceana' " born in 1611 in
Upton, Northamptonshire , was the eldest son ofSir Sapcote(s) Harrington of Rand (died 1629), and great-nephew of the first Lord Harington of Exton (died 1615).The village church is dedicated to [http://homepage.ntlworld.com/peter.fairweather/docs/rand.htmand St Oswald] has a memorial to Sir Vincent Fulnetby (died early 17th century) and his ancestors. The name " 'Fulnetby' ", " 'Fulnery' " in some old records, derives from Old
Scandanavian " 'full+nautr+by' " meaning: " 'village of one who has a full share' ". It appeared in the 1086 Domesday Book as Fulnedebi according to the [http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~englin/R/rand.htm Lincolnshire GenWeb Project] which has a picture of the building.The existing church building dates from the 14th century. It also contains a monument to the Harrington family. A church probably existed here by 1241, and perhaps earlier. The existing building is thought to be at least the third church built at Rand.
