Royal Southern Yacht Club

Royal Southern Yacht Club

The Royal Southern Yacht Club is a yacht club in Hamble, Hampshire, United Kingdom. It was established in 1837 in Southampton as the Royal Southampton Yacht Club and was given Royal patronage by HRH Queen Victoria. The Club House, which still stands opposite Southampton's Royal Pier, was built in 1846.

The Royal Southampton Yacht Club went through financial difficulties through most of the 19th century. In 1844 the club wanted to organize a large regatta, but having no sufficient funds, it decided to increase the entrance fee. The resulting bureaucratic process involved altering its name to "Royal Southern Yacht Club", its present denomination.

In mid-twentieth century, as Southampton's harbor expanded commercially, its waters became less attractive for yachting. Finally the club moved to Hamble, south-east of Southampton, in 1947. [ [http://www.royal-southern.co.uk/Club/Est1837OurHistory/tabid/66/Default.aspx History] ]
