Spencer Virgil Jones (born
17 September 1945 inSafford, Arizona ) has been ageneral authority ofThe Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) since 2002. He is a member of theSecond Quorum of the Seventy .Biography
Jones was raised in the largely
Latter-day Saint town ofVirden, New Mexico . He served as aMormon missionary in theArgentina North Mission of the LDS Church. Jones received hisbachelor's degree fromBrigham Young University inProvo, Utah . He was a businessman and business owner, in the furniture and cattle businesses.Jones is married to Joyce Elizabeth Mathews; they are the parents of three children.
Prior to becoming a general authority, Jones served in several positions in the LDS Church, including as a bishop. Jones was called as a member of the Second Quorum of the Seventy in October 2002. Prior to this, he had been an
area seventy in theCaribbean Area of the church, one of the few area seventies to have acted as such in an area where they had not previously lived. Jones has also served as president of theChile Antofagasta Mission of the church.Jones has been the president of the
