Flags on the 48

Flags on the 48

of 2001.

History

On September 15, 2001, a group of six hikers climbed up Mt Liberty in New Hampshire with rope, a US Flag, and lengths of PVC tubing to use as a flagpole. They flew the flag from the summit as a memorial to the events and victims of 9/11. This grassroots effort soon turned into an annual event. Event

On the day of the event, hikers climb the 48 Four-thousand footers in the White Mountains. On the summits, they set up flagpoles of their own creation, and from noon to 2pm they fly the US Flag, and optionally other commemorative flags. Individuals may choose to perform additional commemorations. At the end of the event, all items are removed according to Leave No Trace principles.

Schedule

The event takes place on September 11th if it is a Sunday, or on the closest Saturday. The flag is flown from noon until 2pm. The next occurrence will be September 12, 2009.
