Abbott Northwestern Hospital was founded in 1882 as Northwestern Hospital for Women and Children. In 1970 it was joined by Abbott Hospital for Women, which had started in 1902 and in 1975 the Sister Kenny Rehabilitation Institute joined to provide rehabilitation care for patients. The current hospital campus on Chicago Avenue was opened in 1980.
