Eddy Campbell is a
Canadian mathematician ,university professor , anduniversity administrator . He currently serves as actingpresident and vice-chancellor of theMemorial University of Newfoundland , inSt. John's, Newfoundland .H. E. A. (Eddy) Campbell earned two degrees in
mathematics from theMemorial University of Newfoundland , and completed hisdoctorate at theUniversity of Toronto . He did post-doctoral work at theUniversity of Western Ontario . In 1983, he joined the Department of Mathematics and Statistics atQueen's University inKingston, Ontario , eventually rising to head of that department. His main research interest is the invariant theory of finite groups. Campbell then served as Associate Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Science at Queen's. He served as president of theCanadian Mathematical Society from 2003 to 2005.Campbell returned to his original
alma mater in May, 2004, to become a vice-president of Academic Programs at Memorial. He then stepped into the role of acting president and vice-chancellor on January 1, 2008.But Campbell's application to stay in that role on a full-time basis was rejected later in 2008, and he withdrew his name from consideration. The Chair of Memorial's Board of Trustees, Gil Dalton, then withdrew as leader of the search committee in September, 2008. Campbell stated that he would stay on in his current position until at least August, 2009.
