Mike and Mike in the Morning Contest

Making jest of the "Collision at the Coliseum" game featuring the #1 USC Trojans and the #5 Ohio State Buckeyes, Mike Golic and Mike Greenberg, hosts of the popular Mike and Mike in the Morning sports talk radio show on ESPN Radio began a new contest called "Name the Game." In the contest they would choose a random, likely obscure college football game and ask the listeners to phone in or email their suggestions. For the first Name the Game, they chose the Stony Brook University Sea Wolves at the University of Maine Black Bears in Orono, Maine. What started out as a joke quickly turned serious as thousands of suggestions were turned in. Some of them being: The Bore on the Shore, Slaughter at the Sea, Laughingstock at the Lighthouse, Lollapalooza in Lobster Land, Mobsters vs. Lobsters, Altercation on the Atlantic, The Rock Lobster Bowl, The Beatdown in Bangor, Bash at the Bears Den, Ruckus on the Rocks, The L. L. Bean Bowl, Commotion by the Ocean, Stone Cold Clash, Clash of the Crab Cakes Cupcakes, Rock in a Hard Place, If You Love this One, You'll Love Iona-Wagner, Ineptitude in the North Latitude, The Lashing at the Lighthouse. However the winning name was "Battle for the Butter." Maine being famous for it's lobster fishing on the coast. Lobsters are traditional steamed and eaten with melted butter on the side.

The Battle for the Butter

On September 13, 2008, The Battle for the Butter took place in Orono, Maine. The UMaine students decorated with numerous Battle of the Butter signs and costumes for the event. Stony Brook grabbed a quick 7-0 lead when Quarterback Dayne Hoffman threw a 4-yard touchdown pass. After that point it was all UMaine as Quarterback Adam Farkes completed 12 of 22 passes in the game for 148 yards, 4 touchdowns and no interceptions. All four touchdowns came in the first half. Two of them to Wide Receiver Tyrell Jones. At the end of the first half UMaine held the lead 28-10. That was all the scoring the Black Bears would do, however that was all they needed because the Sea Wolves could only score 3 more points in the second half on a 22-yard field goal early in the third quarter. Dayne Hoffman finished the game 19 for 38 for 1 touchdown and two interceptions. Stony Brook's running back duo of Conte Cuttino and Edwin Gowins had both rushed for more than 100-yards in the teams first two games. However, Maine's Black Hole defense only gave up 72-yards on the ground.
