Its principal characteristics are its Loongson MIPS processor and the use of a USB Key as its principal storage.The philosophy behind the project is also quite original : Gdium is a brick inside a wider environment dedicated to knowledge, namely a website providing access to hardware support, software compiled for MIPS and most specifically education resources to be used by teachers and their students. The contents will be certified or not and identified as such.

Technical overview

The EMTEC Gdium Liberty 1000 uses a Loongson MIPS processor from STMicroelectronics and a removable storage on a special USB key, called the G-Key, that is 8GB or 16GB. The key generates no noise, and is less susceptible to mechanical shock damage than hard drives. It also includes a SD card reader, supporting MMC, SD and SDHC cards for additional storage.

The Gdium uses Mandriva as its sole operating system; the machine system boots in 30 seconds. The desktop uses the Metacity window manager with a lxplanel and idesk-based interface. Fifty bundled software applications include OpenOffice.org, Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird, The GIMP and other educational software.
