Emily Smith, 1st Viscountess Hambleden

Emily Danvers Smith, 1st Viscountess Hambleden (1828–13 August 1913) was a British peer and wife of The Rt. Hon. William Henry Smith MP, former Conservative Leader of the House of Commons and grandson of the founders of stationery chain W H Smith.

Biography

Born Emily Danvers, the future Lady Hambleden married Benjamin Auber Leach on 22 July 1854 with whom she had one child:
* Mary Auber Leach (d. 15 February 1930).

Colonel Leach died in 1855 so Danvers married once more, this time to politician William Henry Smith on 13 April 1858. The couple had six children:
* Mabel Danvers Smith (d. 27 March 1956); later The Hon. Mabel Smith
* Emily Anna Smith (d. 28 January 1942); later The Hon. Emily Smith
* Beatrice Danvers Smith (d. 4 December 1942); later The Hon. Beatrice Smith
* Helen Smith (d. 17 January 1944); later The Hon. Helen Smith
* Henry Walton Smith (1 October 1865–February 1866)
* William Frederick Danvers Smith (12 August 1868–16 June 1928); later The Hon. William Smith - heir apparent.

Titles

Following the death of her husband on 6 October 1891, Smith was raised to the peerage as Viscountess Hambleden, of Hambleden in the County of Buckinghamshire on 10 November 1891 in recognition of her husband's contribution to British politics.
