George Herman Babcock

George Herman Babcock

George Herman Babcock (June 17, 1832 – December 16, 1893) was an American inventor. He co-invented an improved safety water tube steam boiler. Together with Stephen Wilcox he founded the Babcock & Wilcox boiler company. Why is he famous ? :George H. Babcock is famous for Improving a water tube steam boiler which provided a safer and more efficient production of steam, next to his co-inventor Stephen Wilcox . Their water tube boiler was build so that it could work perfectly with higher pressures than other boilers from the earlier times. And in 1881, their company was incorporated with Babcock as president and Wilcox as vice president. Since then, Babcock & Wilcox became a world leader in the power generation industry. And later, a major operating unit of McDermott International, a worldwide energy services company.

In 1997, he was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame.
