The Den of Wolves

The Den of Wolves

"The Den of Wolves" is one of Aesop's Fables, although not as well known as most others. Due to its obscurity and moral, it has sometimes been titled in modern retellings as "A Communist Dictator" or "A Socialist Regime".

A wolf who was the leader of a den decreed that all the wolves must take what they have hunted and divide it up to be equally distributed among all, so that the den would not starve. This continued until one such meeting when one of the older wolves said that the leader was observed living in a comfortable cave on the side of the mountain, so by his own laws he needed to somehow transport the cave to the meeting so it could be divided up equally amongst all the wolves. This revelation of the leader's secret residence causes uproarious laughter amongst the other wolves, which mortifies the leader into repealing his decree and saying that wolves may now keep entirely what they hunt or find.
Moral of the story: Those who advocate equality for all and forced redistribution of wealth do not live by the standards they impose on others. ["Aesop's Fables; Complete, Original Translation from Greek" Published by Forgotten Publishers, 2007"]
