College Infrastructure

Drummond and Smith College is made up of four blocks which form to create a central courtyard used for sporting and social functions. Each block has 3 floors and contains laundry facilities along with bathrooms on each floor. The college has a computer room equipped with new PCs and Macs and contains facilities for printing and photocopying.

Also within the college is a fully fitted gym for use by college residents only, a Dark room for the photographer enthusiast and an updated Law Library worth in excess of $1,000,000.

History

Drummond and Smith College is a combination of the original Drummond College and S. H. Smith House.

S. H. Smith House was named after the former Minister for Education, Stephen Henry Smith whilst Drummond College drew its name from the "Father of the University of New England", David Henry Drummond. Both men worked tirelessly towards the advancement of education in NSW and we are told were well acquainted with each other.

The Crest and Motto

The S H Smith House crest used the St Andrews Cross on a curved raised surface set on scroll-like background and the the motto is: Salubritati et litteris studemus, literally meaning "health and letters are our concern". By way of contrast, Drummond College had its crest and motto devised by students in 1970. The motto Cognoscimus quo vivamus literally means "learning to live". The crest is two Tudor roses to represent the two sexes in the college (it was a relatively new concept to have co-ed colleges in 1970); whilst the red waves are symbols from the Drummond family; and the book signifies learning and scholarship.

Both the original College shields, carrying the crest and motto now hang in the College dining room whilst the new College shield takes pride of place.

Professor Michael Stoddart (DVC Academic) officially unveiled the shield for Drummond and Smith College on 25 October 1997 and it incorporates some elements from the antecedent college crests with the addition of the Southern Cross. The wording for the motto is Strength through unity, Per concordiam animi robur literally "through hearts in unison, mind like the strength of oak".

Many of the valued traditions and practices from the original Colleges are in action. Drummond and Smith College, for example, continues the exchange program with Lock Haven University in Pennsylvania, USA. This program was initiated in 1990 at Smith House and will continue to offer a bed-for-bed and fee-for-fee swap for UNE students with the LHU students staying at Drummond and Smith College for their Semester at UNE.

The links with the Drummond family and the annual D H Drummond Dinner continue, the Drummond Address in 2000 being given by the Director of the South Australian Museum, Tim Flannery.

In July 1999 Dr. Sandy Scott retired as Principal of Drummond and Smith College. Allison Rocks took on as The Acting Principal until July, 2000 when the University appointed Edwina Ridgway as Principal of both Drummond & Smith and Duval Colleges.
