Black Media Month is a period begun in 1926 to draw attention to the role of
Africa Americans in American media.History
Black History Month was started by Carter G. Woodson, an African-American historian, in 1926 under the banner: Honoring The Past, Celebrating The Present And Empowering The Future. The idea for Black Media Month began in
Chicago Illinois , out of observations that while media outlets in general were struggling, Black Media outlets were struggling even more and their struggles were reminiscent of those that plagued Black media in bygone eras.Fact|date=September 2008As the first and one of the most celebrated black owned and operated newspapers in the United States, Freedom's Journal still faced financial setbacks and its lack of readership contributed to its ceasing publication in March, 1829.Fact|date=September 2008 Today, Black owned and operated media are faced with similar problems, even while African Americans are seeing greater financial independence. A study by Terry College's Selig Center for Economic Growth projected that Black buying power is projected to top 1.1 trillion by 2012.Fact|date=September 2008
