Esposito started playing professional football in 1992 with
AC Lugano . In 1996, he signed forGrasshopper-Club Zürich and had loan spells atSpain 'sCD Extremadura in 1999 andItaly 'sCagliari Calcio in 2001. Later that year, he moved toAS Saint-Étienne ofFrance but returned toSwitzerland withFC Basel in 2002 and was part of the Basel team that reached the Second Group Phase of theUEFA Champions League .A.S.
