John Stuart Bloor OBE, (born 1944) is an English business magnate, best known for reviving the Triumph Motorcycles name. In 2007 Triumph overtook BMW as the top-selling European motorcycle in America. Bloor also built Derbyshire-based Bloor Holdings into a leading housebuilding organisation

Early life

Bloor was born in a small Derbyshire village and his father was a coal miner. He suffered from health problems and long absences from school limited his formal education, leaving school at the age of 15.

Business

John Bloor's first job was as a trainee plasterer for a local building contractor but two years later he set up his own business and began building his first house before he was 20. His building company is now one of the largest privately-owned house builders in the UK and has contributed to the successful regeneration of the East Midlands.cite web|url=http://www2.le.ac.uk/ebulletin/publications/2000-2009/2006/07/npfolder.2006-07-11.5678371783/bloororation/?searchterm=bloor|title=John Bloor|accessdate=2008-09-12]

Bloor rescued the collapsed Triumph brand in 1983 and invested over £80 million into rebuilding the marque.cite web|url=http://www.birminghampost.net/birmingham-business/richlist2008/richprofiles2008/2008/01/14/8-8-john-bloor-650m-530m-65233-20349841/|title=John Bloor £650m |accessdate=2008-09-12] In 1991 he opened the new Hinckley factory with state-of-the-art tooling. He also had the benefit of advice from nearby engineering firms, including Lotus and Cosworth that have built successful racing cars.

The Triumph factory at Hinckley is now a significant employer and produces over 45,000 motorcycles a year. A fire in 2002 stopped production for six months when it destroyed one of the company’s two factories. The fire led to a £4.5m loss in 2003 but enabled Bloor to significantly improve production facilites and Triumph is now one of the most efficient motorcycle factories in the world.cite web|url=http://business.timesonline.co.uk/tol/business/industry_sectors/engineering/article534772.ece|title=Triumph roars back |accessdate=2008-09-12]

In the year to June 2007 Bloor Holdings profits were £40m on £566m sales AND Triumph made a profit of £103m.cite web|url=http://www.timesonline.co.uk/richlist/person/0,,47136,00.html|title=Sunday Times Rich List|accessdate=2008-09-12]

Personal life

Bloor lives in Swadlincote, South Derbyshire, England. He has problems with his hip so rarely rides motorcycles, preferring a Mercedes.cite web|url=http://money.cnn.com/magazines/fsb/fsb_archive/2002/04/01/320994/index.htm|title=A Sweet Triumph |accessdate=2008-09-12]
