Van Gelder Studio

The Van Gelder Studio is a recording studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey. It was set up in 1959 by Rudy Van Gelder and has been used to record many albums released by major jazz labels such as Verve Records, Blue Note, Prestige and CTI Records. Background

After having gained a reputation in the mid-Fifties for the quality of the recordings he made at his parents' house in Hackensack, New Jersey, Van Gelder moved to a new facility in Englewood.

The structure was inspired by the work of Frank Lloyd Wright and bore some resemblance to a chapel, with high ceilings and fine acoustics.

Notable recordings made at Englewood include John Coltrane's "A Love Supreme" (1964), and Stanley Turrentine's "Cherry" and "Don't Mess with Mister T".
