wikify = October 2008Mirza Ahmad entered local government in 1985. He joined Birmingham City Council in June 2000 from Bolton MBC where he was Assistant Director (Legal).
He is Chairman of the Bar Association for Local Government and the Public Service and a member of the General Council of the Bar for England and Wales, the Birmingham Law Society, a Vice-President and Lead Officer for the Association of Council Secretaries and Solicitors (ACSeS) and the Society of Local Authority Chief Executives (SOLACE).
In February 2007, he was recognised in the UK's Inaugural Muslim Power 100 and was also awarded their Public Sector Award.
Mirza has an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws (LLD (Hon)) from Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU), a Masters Degree in Business Administration (MBA) from MMU and a Masters Degree in Employment Law and Industrial Relations (LLM) from the University of Leicester. Mirza is the City Council's Monitoring Officer and, as such, deals with high level corporate legal and management issues. He currently has corporate lead responsibility for over 700 staff dealing with Democratic, Information Governance, Legal and Regulatory Services. He is also Birmingham City Council's Corporate Lead Officer for the Data Protection Act, Freedom of Information Act, and Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000.
Mirza is a recognised national expert on Human Rights Act 1998's implications for Local Government and has presented national seminars on legal and managerial matters including Good Governance (which includes ethical and corporate governance), Human Rights, Freedom of Information, Corporate Manslaughter, Best Value and Business Excellence.
Mirza is the General Editor of Butterworth Tolley's "Knights Guide to Best Value and Public Procurement - Law & Practice" and a member of the editorial board for Butterworth's Local Government Direct and author of "Implications of the Human Rights Act 1998 for UK Local Government".
