The original name of Sadao were known as Changlun, means 'the falling of an elephant' in Malay. The district were once a part of
Changlun , and under the overlordship of MalaySultanate of Kedah .When the
United Kingdom and Siam (Thailand) signed theAnglo-Siamese Treaty of 1909 , the area ofChanglun were divided into two parts, which is:-
*the main border town ofChanglun in the district ofKubang Pasu , StateKedah ofMalaysia ;
*the other part of Changlun remained with Siam and was renamed to be Tambon Chang Lon.The Tambon Chang Lon was officially upgraded to a district in 1917 and renamed once again to be Sadao. The name Sadao is the Thai word for
Neem Tree .Geography
Neighboring districts are (from the west clockwise) Khuan Don and Khuan Kalong of
Satun Province , Khlong Hoi Khong, Hat Yai, Chana and Na Thawi of Songkhla Province. To the southwest is the state ofKedah andPerlis inMalaysia .The district marks the end of the
Phetkasem highway , the longest road of Thailand which runs from Bangkok till the border at Sadao pass (Thailand) -Bukit Kayu Hitam pass (Malaysia ).Padang Besar is another important border crossing betweenThailand andMalaysia . International railpassengers and -cargo pass the border here in this divided town intoPerlis inMalaysia .Administration
The district is subdivided into 9 subdistricts ("
tambon "), which are further subdivided into 67 villages ("muban "). The town ("thesaban mueang ") of Sadao covers the complete "tambon" Sadao. Padang Besar is another town which covers parts of the "tambon" Padang Besar. There are further two townships ("thesaban tambon ") - Prik and Phang La each covering parts of the same-named "tambon".
