Sadao ( _th. สะเดา) is a small town and district ("Amphoe") on the border of Malaysia in the Songkhla Province, southern Thailand.

History

The original name of Sadao were known as Changlun, means 'the falling of an elephant' in Malay. The district were once a part of Changlun, and under the overlordship of Malay Sultanate of Kedah.

When the United Kingdom and Siam (Thailand) signed the Anglo-Siamese Treaty of 1909, the area of Changlun were divided into two parts, which is:-
*the main border town of Changlun in the district of Kubang Pasu, State Kedah of Malaysia;
*the other part of Changlun remained with Siam and was renamed to be Tambon Chang Lon.

The Tambon Chang Lon was officially upgraded to a district in 1917 and renamed once again to be Sadao. The name Sadao is the Thai word for Neem Tree.

Geography

Neighboring districts are (from the west clockwise) Khuan Don and Khuan Kalong of Satun Province, Khlong Hoi Khong, Hat Yai, Chana and Na Thawi of Songkhla Province. To the southwest is the state of Kedah and Perlis in Malaysia.

The district marks the end of the Phetkasem highway, the longest road of Thailand which runs from Bangkok till the border at Sadao pass (Thailand) - Bukit Kayu Hitam pass (Malaysia).Padang Besar is another important border crossing between Thailand and Malaysia. International railpassengers and -cargo pass the border here in this divided town into Perlis in Malaysia.

Padang Besar is another town which covers parts of the "tambon" Padang Besar. There are further two townships ("thesaban tambon") - Prik and Phang La each covering parts of the same-named "tambon".
