- Karshi-Khanabad
Karshi-Khanabad is an
airbase in south-easternUzbekistan at Coord|38|49|48|N|65|55|12|E|type:airport. Karshi-Khanabad was leased by the government of Uzbekistan to theUnited States . The U.S. has used the base, also known as K2 and "Stronghold Freedom", since 2001 to support missions againstal-Qaeda in neighboringAfghanistan . OnJuly 29 ,2005 , amid strained relations caused by theMay 2005 unrest in Uzbekistan , the U.S. was told to vacate the base within six months.It was vacated by the United States in November 2005.
