Chicago, Illinois , Brown graduated fromEmerson College inBoston with a degree in theatrical makeup. Afterwards, she moved toNew York City to work as a professional makeup artist. In 1991, she and a chemist released a line of new lipsticks under the brand Bobbi Brown Essentials, which debuted atBergdorf Goodman in New York City. Today, the line is available at few fine retailers such asLord & Taylor . The success of that makeup line led Estee Lauder to buy the company in 1995.
