Ariconium

Ariconium

Ariconium is a site in Roman Britain known from Iter XIII of the Antonine Itinerary as being between 13 miles west of Glevum (later Gloucester).

Identified since the middle of the ninteenth century [Thomas Wright, "Wanderings of an Antiquary", 1854 ] as being adjacent to the modern village of Weston-under-Penyard, the site may have served as an centre for the ironworking in the Bromsash area. In the Sub-Roman period, the settlement gave its name (by regular phonetic development) to the British Ergyng and the Anglo-Saxon Archenfield.
