Paul Walsh (businessman)

Paul Walsh (born May 1 1955, Manchester) is the Chief executive officer of Diageo.

Early life

He attended the Royton and Crompton School in Royton, Oldham. He initially wanted to become an RAF pilot but failed the medical due to colour blindness. He studied [http://www.business.mmu.ac.uk/programmes/undergraduate/coursedetail.php?uref=3 Accounting] and Economics at Manchester Polytechnic.

Career

After leaving university, he spent six years with the Co-op as an accountant. In 1982, he joined the brewers Watney, Mann and Truman as a Financial Planning and Accounts Manager. This company was owned by Grand Metropolitan. In 1986 he became Finance Director of the Brewing Division. In 1987 he moved to America when he became CEO of Pillsbury, and joined the GrandMet board of directors in 1995, which became Diageo in December 1997. He became Chief Operating Officer of Diageo on January 1 2000, and CEO on September 1 2000.

Personal life

He married Nikki in 1980 and they have a son (born c. 1990). He met Nikki in Chadderton in 1978 when she was a Laker air hostess. In America, they lived in Minneapolis. They divorced in 2006 and she received a divorce settlement of around £15m. He has a £4m house on a 35 acre country estate at Petworth, West Sussex, and earns around £4m a year. He has a 2,400 acre estate in South Africa on which he likes to shoot antelope.
