The history of Superchips can be traced back to 1976, when founder Peter Wales discovered that the ECU of a Mitsubishi Starion Group A race car could be modified for fast road use. He reprogrammed the chip to deliver more power and torque – which led to a number of Group N championship wins for the Mitsubishi in the mid-1980s – and went on to develop a range of chips for a number of turbocharged cars.
The company's early conversions involved the physical replacement of a chip in the vehicle’s ECU. Today, however, most conversions are carried out by connecting a laptop computer to the vehicle's diagnostic port and reprogramming the existing chip with one of a vast database of conversion programs, each produced for a specific make, model and ECU software reference.
Nowadays Superchips Limited offers remaps for an extensive range of cars and other vehicles with turbo-diesel and turbo- and
naturally aspirated petrol engines.Superchips Limited is frequently employed to provide technical consultancy by vehicle manufacturers as well as a large number of race and rally teams. The company also provides technical scrutineering services for race series around the world.

Bluefin
A recent development from Superchips Limited is a hand-held, ‘DIY’ tuning kit called Bluefin, which allows owners to perform the conversion themselves, quickly and easily, to Superchips’ predetermined settings. Bluefin is available for an increasing range of vehicles, and various versions offer additional functionality including fault code reading, immobilisation and live data logging.
