The Muamba rail disaster was a rail accident that occurred on May 25, 2002 near Tenga, Mosambique on the Maputo-Ressano Garcia railway, the main line connecting Mozambique and South Africa. The disaster occurred when an integrated freight and passenger train lost power as it mounted a steep hill. To overcome the problem, engineers disconnected the freight cars (which were carrying cement), located at the front of the train, and drove them to Moamba, leaving four large stones under the passenger train to stop it from rolling down the hill until he returned. While gone, the passenger cars dislodged the rocks and rolled down the hill, smashing into the freight cars and derailing.

Three days of mourning were declared by then President of Mozambique Joaquim Chissano.
