"For the Modern submarine please see Akula class submarine"

The Akula ( _ru. Акула - Shark) was a submarine built for the Imperial Russian Navy. The boat was designed by I. G. Bubnov and was an amalgam of the previous Minoga and the Kasatka class submarine designs. The design was a singe hull type with a diving depth of 25 fathoms. Significant initial problems were experienced and the electric moor and propellers needed to be replaced. Akula was the first russian able to cruise long distances. In 1912 Akula made first in the world multi-torpedo volley with 5 torpedoes.

She subsequently served in the Baltic Fleet during World War I and unsucesfully attacked the German battleship Beowulf. She was sunk by a mine near Windau in November 1915.
