SS Hispania

SS Hispania

SS "Hispania" was a Swedish 1337-ton triple-expansion engine steamer built in 1912, now wrecked in the Sound of Mull, Scotland.

On 18 December 1954 "Hispania" sank after hitting a reef in a storm. Heading to Varberg from Liverpool she attempted to navigate through the Sound of Mull but hit the Sgeir More (Big Rock) and started to list. The order to abandon ship was given and the crew lowered the life boats and rowed to shore. The captain refused to leave the ship and chose to sink with it. The wreck sits, intact and upright, in 30m of clear water at coord|56|34.95|N|5|59.15|W|display=inline,title. The "Hispania" can only be dived only on slack water, which is between 2 and 1 hours before high or low water Oban.Fact|date=September 2008
