Talgua

Talgua is a municipality in the Honduran department of Lempira.Talgua is one of the oldest municipalities of the Lempira department. It was already there when Gracias was founded. The best way to access this municipality capital is starting from Santa Rosa de Copán.

History

It was originally founded in the colonial period in the place called "Las Mercedes" village. Also it was known as a village where Lenca indians dwelled, by Pedro de Alvarado and his troops. In the administration of president Ramon Villeda Morales, on January 2 1963, the capital was moved from Talagua to San Antonio de Pedernales. The old church is preserved as a relic.

Geography

It is located right on top a small hill on the side of a river. But there are high mountains around its capital and some of these belong to Copán department. The weather is hot because of the elevation from sea level and the vegetation, which consists of dry sub tropical forest. Some pine tress are seen on the highest hills.

Its boundaries are:

*South : Las Flores municipality
*East : Las Flores municipality
*West : Copán department

*Surface Extents: 82 km²

Resources

This is one of the poorest municipalities of the department.due to its elevation from sea level is not possible to have coffee plantations, therefore the main economical activities are beans and corn crops, followed by commerce of groceries and other home supplies. Cattle raising is for local consumption only. Since it is near a river, some people obtain aggregates for concrete from it. Also it has electricity and mobile communication coverage.

Population

The cross-breed of Spanish and Indians are up to 80 % of the population, the remaining percent consists of Lenca Indians, that have made it through time to our days preserving most of their traditions and culture. They are very isolated people.

Tourism

There is a turn off to the left right after a bridge, about 15 km heading to Ocotepeque. Then the road continues for 12 km on an unpaved road, which by the way is not in good conditions. This municipality capital is better known for having in the present some settlement of Lenca Indians. These are settlement are seen on the mountains, as well as their crops and huts. There have been found many old clay pots. The old church is an attraction but unfortunately it has no been properly preserved. Also the river provides several places to go for a swim. A hot spring spot is reported here as well. Last but not least, the visitor can have a different angle at Celaque mountain.
