History
In April 1977, the
National Socialist White Workers Party opened a bookstore at 3608 Taraval Street inSan Francisco ,California . According to newspaper reports a group of 50 survivors ofHitler 'sdeath camps attacked the store with hatchets and crowbars destroying its inventory. Out of this incidentHolocaust survivors and refugees of theThird Reich assisted by theJewish Community Relations Council founded theCommittee of Remembrance . The Committee was created as a living memorial to the victims of the Holocaust, a permanent institution for Holocaust related activities, education, and documentation. The Holocaust Library and Research Center opened its doors on September 9, 1979, at 601 14th Avenue in San Francisco. In 1986, it was renamed the Holocaust Center of Northern California. ----Targets
HCNC is dedicated to educating young and old alike about the consequences of racism and indifference, and the lessons of tolerance that can be gleaned from learning about the Holocaust.The Center works with public school districts, private schools, Jewish day and supplementary schools, and individual educators to design curriculum and lesson plans, and to provide specialized teacher training and consultation.HCNC’s University level library complete with an extensive archive of correspondence, periodicals, artifacts and rare books serves as a unique teaching resource. To help us reach out to thousands of students HCNC also makes available curriculum guides, books, DVDs, films, slides, maps, and posters to make history come alive and to assist educators in making their classrooms a place where students are challenged and encouraged to be active learners. ----
Location
The Holocaust Center of Northern California is located in the Jewish Community Federation building in San Francisco, on Steuart Street between Mission and Howard. The Center is just off the Embarcadero, and across the street from the Rincon Center.
