Stanford E. Parris (born
September 9 1929 ) is a politician who served asU.S. Representative fromVirginia as a Republican.Parris was born in
Champaign, Illinois . He attended his hometown University of Illinois, earning anLL.B. in 1950. Plans to continue his education were interrupted when he signed up for theUnited States Air Force following the outbreak of theKorean War . Parris served as a pilot during four years of the war, earning numerous honors for valor in battle, including the Distinguished Flying Cross and thePurple Heart . Following his discharge from the military, Parris worked briefly as an airline pilot, but soon returned to school, earning aJuris Doctor fromGeorge Washington University , inWashington, DC . He set up a private law practice inAlexandria, Virginia , in 1958. Parris invested in other ventures, as well, purchasing aChrysler dealership and becoming the manager of a travelingair show .In 1964, Parris successfully earned his first political office, a seat on the Fairfax County Board of Commissioners, serving one four-year term. In 1969, he was elected to the
Virginia House of Delegates , and he entered Congress in 1973. However, Parris lost a reelection bid for a second term to Democrat Herb Harris in 1974, amid nationwide anti-incumbency sentiments. In 1980, Parris rodeRonald Reagan 's coattails into his old seat, defeating Harris. Ten years later, he lost his 1990 re-election bid to the current holder of that seat, DemocratJim Moran .Several weeks after leaving Congress, Parris was appointed to a seven-year term as the Administrator of the
Saint Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation . He resigned four years later to run for a seat in theVirginia Senate .
