The Republican River rises on the high plains of eastern
Colorado in theUnited States . The two main tributaries, called the North and South forks, join atBenkelman, Nebraska . From there, the river flows generally eastward along the southern border ofNebraska before curving southward intoKansas . The Republican River joins theSmoky Hill River atJunction City, Kansas to form theKansas River .Some cities along the river are
McCook, Nebraska ,Concordia, Kansas andJunction City, Kansas . Near Concordia is theRepublican River Pegram Truss , a bridge that goes over the Republican River that is listed on theNational Register of Historic Places .The river was named after a branch of
Pawnee Indians known as "the Republicans" (Stewart 1967:223).Allocation of the water from the Republican River is governed through an agreement called the Republican River Compact, involving the states of Nebraska, Kansas and Colorado.
