James Martorano

James Martorano also known as "Jimmy" is the younger brother of John Martorano who was a contract killer and member of the Winter Hill Gang and later the Patriarca crime family.

Biography

James (Giacomo) Martorano was born with his brother in Somerville, Massachusetts to a first generation Italian immigrant father Luigi Martorano who was a Patriarca crime family mob associate from Martorano, close to Parma, Italy and an Irish-American mother. James was raised in Milton, Massachusetts. He and his brother John Martorano attended Mount Saint Charles Academy in Woonsocket, Rhode Island, where he played football with future CBS News television journalist Ed Bradley whom he affectionally used to call "Big Ed". He quickly joined the rackets in the Combat Zone of South Boston with his older brother John. James was the first member of the Winter Hill Gang whose information fellow gang members James J. Bulger and Stephen Flemmi to be convicted by information received by them as Top Echelon Informants in the Peter Pallotta homicide. He later enrolled in Boston College with future Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agent John Connolly. Bulger informed the FBI of James' alibi witness for the Pallotta murder and was sent away for many years. After Martorano was sent to prison, his friend and informant Stephen Flemmi would later comment, "Jimmy does good time." James, like his brother John, became a close friend of Stephen Flemmi and became a protegé criminal of him. He became close friends of Winter Hill Gang member John Callahan, who his brother would later murder sharing an apartment together and were habituates of the Rusty Scupper on Commercial Street in Boston, Massachusetts.
