Vyshny Volochyok ( _ru. Вы́шний Волочёк) is a town in
Tver Oblast ofRussia . The settlement is known since 1471. A highway and a railway connectingMoscow andSaint Petersburg pass through the town. Population: 56,405 (2002 Census).The town is located 119 km north-west of
Tver , in theValdai Hills , between theTvertsa and Tsna rivers, on the watershed between the basins of theVolga and theBaltic Sea . Hence the town's name is translated from Russian as "Upper Portage". In 1703-1722 Peter the Great had a canal constructed to link these two rivers (seeMariinsk Canal System ). Later, Vyshny Volochok became a major centre of textile manufacture.References
