There are a number of recognized subspecies, such as Phragmatobia fuliginosa melitensis which is found in Malta and Phragmatobia fuliginosa borealis which is found in Scotland.

The wingspan is 35-45 mm. The moth flies from May to August depending on the location.

The larvae feed on various herbaceous plants.
