Waste Management Industry Training & Advisory Board

The Waste Management Industry Training & Advisor Board (WAMITAB) is a company & registered charity in the UK that is tasked with supporting training & technical compitence in the waste management industry. WAMITAB is the awarding body for technical qualifications in the waste industry.

Role

WAMITAB was established in 1989 with a remit to determine and advise on policy and standards of education, qualifications and training for all employees in the Waste Management Industry. WAMITAB is the awarding body for the waste management industry in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and joint awarding body, with Scottish Qualifications Authority, for qualifications in Scotland The Objectives of WAMITAB are:

*Determining and advising upon the policy and standards of education and training and qualifications for persons engaged in the waste management industry;
*Promoting and supporting the education, training and qualifications for persons in the waste management industry;
*Deciding on the educational, training and experience content of the educational courses to be taken for such qualifications or certificates as the board may approve;
*Determining and supervising the award of any such qualification or certificate; and
*Promoting and commissioning research for the benefit of the industry and to facilitate the interchange of knowledge within the industry.

WAMITAB's first task was to develop a statutory scheme for demonstrating technical competence in the industry. This came into effect as part of the "Fit and Proper Person" requirements of the Waste Management Licensing Regulations in 1994. This scheme is based on firstly achieving a vocational qualification at Level 3 or 4 (for England, Scotland and Wales), and then the successful candidate is awarded a Certificate of Technical Competence (COTC) by WAMITAB. In addition, WAMITAB has also developed Level 1 and 2 vocational qualifications covering other occupational activities including waste (refuse) collection, recycling, street cleansing, landfill and treatment (treatment is a term used to cover waste transfer, treatment and civic amenity activities).

WAMITAB’s role has changed since its formation and WAMITAB is currently the Awarding Body for the waste management industry (WAMITAB is a joint awarding body with the Scottish Qualifications Authority for Scotland for SVQs in Scotland).
