In spite of many difficulties, he initiated changes in the educational system of Mauritius in order to adapt it to be the needs and expectations of the students.

History

The plot of land on which the school was built was, in fact, donated by Dr. Regis Chaperon.

The growth of Dr Régis Chaperon State Secondary School shows in a certain way, the development of secondary education in Mauritius. When it opened in 1978 the school catered for pupils up to form II only. The School was originally founded in 1978 with the other main objective to provide free education. The school had many scholarships winners during its existence before in 2002 when it became a school with only school certificate students which was ordered by that time Minister of education. In 2005 when the new government took over, it became again Higher School Certificate School and since that year there is wait for scholarships winners. However, with the introduction of free secondary education in 1976 and the growth in demand for secondary education, the government decided to upgrade the school and admit students up to form V. H.S.C classes were introduced in 1988 and in 1999 the school produced its first laureate. The school has also achieved creditable results in both the School Certificate and Higher School Certificate over the past few years. The school has, through the years, established itself as a prestigious institution and has earned the esteem of the public through its academic performance. These facts deserve to be highlighted when we consider that Dr Régis Chaperon SSS is a relatively new comer in the field of secondary education. In 1998, an Amnesty and Health Club was founded by the students. Then, in 2000, our first ever school magazine was launched.

The high school was for mixed students, admitting both boys and girls until the Gaëtan Renald School was declared only girls school. The school was the first secondary institution to offer free education as it was the first SSS (state secondary school) to open its door. The school is among the best schools of Mauritius just behind Royal College Port Louis(leading secondary school in Mauritius), Queen Elizabeth College, Royal College Curepipe and Dr Maurice Cure College .

Success

The school was declared as one of the best Mauritian secondary schools in 1998 as it gained recognition when having its first Scholarship winner in Economics field. It raised to stardom in the education hierarchy. The final year results were even better the following years but it regained its recognition when obtaining once more a scholarship winner in 2002 in science field. More recently in February 2009, yet another scholarship winner in the science field. The school has been ranked 5th best secondary school in Mauritius just behind Queen Elizabeth College holding the 1st position and Royal Curepipe ,Royal Port Louis and Dr Maurice Cure College.

Back in Race

In 2008 a new team was appointed, a completely revised and competent administration was chosen to revive the school's performance. A new principal was appointed.

New Ushers were appointed. The whole Administration was completely revised and changed from what it was before.

In April 2008 Mr Nojib was appointed as principal and was asked to remake the school's structure. Mr Nojib was proved right. He was named best principal in the school's all time.

Shortly afterward the school came back in the headlines of the media but this time not as the worst but as the best school. The school had won the fierce battle and came back in race and competition with other schools. It won many awards as SEMDEX Young Investors Award, Green Peace Competition and social environment for the Indian ocean schools where it came first.

Dr Regis Chaperon sss was back. The school organized its award ceremony and also launched its website as well as editing its magazine which was not published for 8 years as the last magazine was issued in 2000.

The Minister of Education assisted the school's award ceremony and with his conferred power declared the ceremony best function in any high school up to now.

Recently

The school organised its price giving award function and the function was given a good coverage. The school also made progress in terms of informatics by constructing a web site on the internet and also launched its school magazine

The school has an old infrastructure and will be undergoing construction by 2009 to renovate the entire school. Mr R.Patten, Educator teaching Maths, will be retiring. The school does not focus only on laureates but aims at the development of each and every student.
