Shintō Munen-ryū

Shintō Munen-ryū(神道無念流) was a sword style established by Fukui Hyoemon Yoshihira(福井兵右衛門嘉平)in the early 1700's.

History

The style was popularized by Okada Jumatsu(岡田十松). Okada established Gekikenkan(撃剣館) dojo. Later his famous pupil Saito Yakuro(斎藤弥九郎) established Renpeikan (練兵館) dojo also.Renpeikan was one of the big three dojo in Edo. Many historical swordsmen acquired Shintō Munen-ryū in Bakumatsu.

Swordsmen of this tradition were well reknown for their powerful striking ability. For this Shintō Munen-ryū swordsmen were strictly prohibited from engaging in matches with outsiders.
