Sidney Curnow Vosper RWS, RWA (October 29, 1866 - July 10, 1942) was a painter and etcher of landscapes and figure subjects.

Biography

Sidney Curnow Vosper was born in Stonehouse, Plymouth, Devon in 1866 to Samuel and Eleanor Vosper.

He attended King’s College school in Taunton, Somerset, and Plymouth College. Following this he spent three years as an architect’s apprentice before leaving to study for three years at the Académie Colarossi in Paris.

In 1902 he married Constance, youngest daughter of Frank T. James, a solicitor in Merthyr Tydfil. Constance died in 1910.

Work

Vosper painted landscapes but is perhaps best known for his figure painting. A favoured subject was the town and people of Le Faouët in Brittany.

Probably his best known work is his portrait of Siân Owen, a member of the congregation of Capel Salem at Pentre Gwynfryn, in traditional Welsh costume. The picture, which was purchased by William Hesketh Lever for the Lady Lever Art Gallery, was subsequently used in publicity for Sunlight soap.
