Sidney Curnow Vosper was born in
Stonehouse, Plymouth ,Devon in 1866 to Samuel and Eleanor Vosper.He attended King’s College school in
Taunton ,Somerset , andPlymouth College . Following this he spent three years as an architect’s apprentice before leaving to study for three years at theAcadémie Colarossi inParis .In 1902 he married Constance, youngest daughter of Frank T. James, a solicitor in
Merthyr Tydfil . Constance died in 1910.Work
Vosper painted landscapes but is perhaps best known for his figure painting. A favoured subject was the town and people of
Le Faouët inBrittany .Probably his best known work is his portrait of Siân Owen, a member of the congregation of Capel Salem at
Pentre Gwynfryn , in traditional Welsh costume. The picture, which was purchased byWilliam Hesketh Lever for theLady Lever Art Gallery , was subsequently used in publicity forSunlight soap .Bibliography
