Nyzette Cheveron

Nyzette Cheveron

Nyzette Cheveron (died 21 April 1605) was an alleged Belgian witch. She is one of the victims of the witch hunt which took place in the Ardennes in Belgium, then the Spanish Netherlands, particularly around the area of Chevron, around the years of 1604-1605, which is perhaps the most known witch hunt in Belgian history.

Nyzette Cheveron was arrested for witchcraft and interrogated violently; her confession was a very detailed description of a witch's sabbath. Her confession also led to the continuation of witch hunts in the area.

She confessed to have been a witch for thirteen years. She had a personal devil called Verdulet, who had come to her bed, gave her marks with his claws, had a body as cold as ice and had taken her to a great dance with other women and their devils. She gave the names of those women, which had been previously executed as witches. Whenever she disobeyed her devil, he had beaten her. She confessed to have cast black poison on the house of a priest and to have killed a cow with Emma Casis and Mme Sicquet. On the sabbath, she had danced, eaten and drank excessively; the women had played violins and rang bells. Her devil had made a enough poison to kill many people. She pointed out several other women, among them Anne Nouville.

After making her confession, she declared she was willing to die for this. She was judged guilty and sentenced to death. She was strangled and burned on the 21st of March 1605. Her confession led to the arrest of Anne Nouville, who also confessed to have met and had sexual relations with a devil called Macquet and attended a sabbath with other women. She in turn, also pointed out several women and was executed. The witch hunt in the Ardennes also spread to Habiemont, where Mariette Estante was killed, Les Forges, where Anne des Forges was tortured to confess, and Izier, where Maroie Bertrand (whose relative had been burned alive in 1586) was strangled and burnt in January 1606. In Chevron, several men and women were pointed out by Anne Stolano Chevron to have danced with devils at a sabbath and were sentenced to strangulation and fire, but she managed to escape.
