List of First Ladies of the United States
- List of First Ladies of the United States
This is a list of the First Ladies of the United States. The first list includes only those persons who are recognized by the National First Ladies Library as a First Lady of the United States (most are the wife of the President of the United States). The second list includes women who have acted as hostess on behalf of the First Lady when she was otherwise unable or unwilling.
The numerals indicate the consecutive time in office served by a single person. For example, George Washington, husband of Martha Washington, served two consecutive terms and is counted as the first president (not the first and second), just as Martha is counted as the first first lady. The first ladies have been honored in the Presidential $1 Coin Program.
