Rahim Blak

Biography

Rahim Blak was born in 1983 in Skopie in Macedonia. He lives and works in Kraków. He studied at the Department of Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków. His graduation work entitled “Building investments 2006-2010 as sculptures in public space” and “Autobiography as Theory of Everything.” both were supervised by prof. Andrzej Bednarczyk. He exhibits his works since early childhood. Several up to a dozen of people in Poland state they are Rahim Blak, the number changes. Under this pseudonym work students and graduates of art academies form Kraków, Poznań, and Wrocław, however they remain anonymous. The person of Rahim Blak was set up by one person, however all the people who work as him state they were this first one. However, Rahim Blak is not an artistic group. Everyone who uses this name, has to give the artists his own biography and his achievements. Rahim Blak’s biography is a collage of several biographies. On the other hand the way Rahim Blak’s work is organized and the coherent philosophy of art he produced suggest that all the works have been conceived by one artistic personality. Rahim Blak is a construct or a product of the mechanism he started. He willingly provokes doubts concerning his person, so that the public’s reactions and speculations can be incorporated within the sphere of his biggest artwork – his biography.

Programme

In his works he revises his own biography to “construct” the myth of artist reflecting on its role and on the influence of art on contemporary society. He engages individuals connected with politics, art world, business, and religion to take part in artistic projects. He integrates subjects from different circles and of different professions, e.g. he confronts The National Art Gallery “Zachęta” with development company thus investing apartments they build with the status of an art work; or he inspires the Muslim Community to attempt to build a Mosque in a Christian city. Using arguments and terminology specific for art discourse he enables politicians to speak about the independence of Kosovo in the National Museum. The crucial issue is that his symbolic and quasi-theatrical actions have direct consequences. His artistic programme intends to reshape reality by means of art. “The Manifesto of the Causative Power of Art” is realised with the erection of buildings (The Centre for Islamic Culture AL-FAN, Folia Concept Music Club, or an estate of detached houses in Puszcza Niepołomicka). These building investments he defines as his “sculptures in public space”.

- “For the Brothers from Kosovo”(2006) – video;

- Building Investments as Sculptures in Public Space, including: “The Centre of Islamic Culture AL-FAN in Kraków”, Folia Concept Club, Housing estate “Siedlisko Niepołomice” (2006-2010).
