Württemberg G12

The Württemberg G12 was a 2-10-0 steam locomotive for goods traffic based on the Prussian G 12.1. It was used by many of the State railway companies of the greater German Empire including the Royal Württemberg State Railways though not the Royal Bavarian State Railways or the railways of Mekelenburg and Aldenburg.

The locomotive came about by the observation during World War I that having each railway company employ and finance the construction of their own locomotive types led to a lack of standardisation resulting in the confusion of technicians trying to maintain unfamiliar locomotive types. Furthermore the military needed a fast standardised goods locomotive that did not have a high axle load. The Prussian G12.1 met this requirement and so was standardised as the G12.
