P. Rajagopala Achariyar

Diwan Bahadur Sir Perungavur Rajagopala Achariyar Avargal KCSI CIE (18 March 1862–1 December 1927) was an Indian civil servant.

Achariyar was born in Madras and educated at the Presidency College and Madras Law College. In 1888 he joined the Statutory Civil Service as an assistant collector and magistrate. In 1896 he was seconded to Cochin State as Diwan (chief minister) to Maharaja Rama Varma. In 1901 he was appointed Registrar of Co-operative Credit Societies in the Madras Presidency, and in 1904 Diwan of Travancore State. In 1914 he returned to Madras as Secretary of the Judicial Department, the first Indian to hold the post. In 1917 he was appointed a member of the Council of the Governor of Madras and then became first President of the Legislative Council of Madras. In 1923 he was appointed to the Council of India in London, resigning in 1925 due to ill-health and returning to India.

He was appointed Companion of the Order of the Indian Empire (CIE) in 1909 and Knight Commander of the Order of the Star of India (KCSI) in the 1920 New Year Honours. [LondonGazette |issue=31712 |date=30 December 1919 |startpage=4 |supp=yes]
