Paul Winter Consort is an American musical group led by the soprano saxophonist
Paul Winter . Founded in1967 , the group mixes elements of classical music, jazz, and world musics, as well as the sounds of animals and nature. Current members also include percussionistGlen Velez and pianistPaul Halley , and former members include woodwind playerPaul McCandless , percussionistGuilherme Franco and guitaristsRalph Towner andJim Scott , bassistGlen Moore and sitaristCollin Walcott . Former Consort members McCandless, Towner, Moore, and Walcott left to form Oregon.The Consort recorded an album on location in the
Grand Canyon and gives annual winter and summer solstice concerts at theCathedral of Saint John the Divine inNew York City . The Annual Winter Solstice Celebration dates from 1980 and has been broadcast since 1988 onNational Public Radio .
