Built by the
US Army 2nd Battalion of43rd Engineer General Service Regiment (less Company E), during theBattle of Milne Bay duringWorld War II . Originally known as "No. 3 Strip". The airfield was renamed "Turnbull Field" on14 September 1942 in honour ofRoyal Australian Air Force Squadron Leader Peter Turnbull, who was killed in an aircraft crash. The single runway was convert|5000|ft|m long x convert|100|ft|m wide surfaced with marston matting. Taxiways andrevetment s extended off both sides of the runway.The aerodrome was abandoned in
