Brian Collins (reporter)

Brian Collins is a reporter for KXXV television in Waco, Texas, but is best known for creating the catchphrase "Boom goes the dynamite" during a college sportscast that became an internet video sensation.

Collins agreed to fill in for a friend on Ball State University's campus newscast during his freshman year providing sports highlights. When the teleprompter failed and printed copies were not in order, he improvised. Eventually posted on YouTube, the newscast is now known as "the Collins incident" in communications classes.cite news|url=http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/columns/story?id=2785830|title=Despite 'worst' sportscast, Collins says he'd try again|last=Wojciechowsk|first=Gene |publisher=ESPN|accessdate=2008-08-26] [cite news|url=http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/07/31/AR2007073101137_pf.html|title=TV Anchors Subjected to Ridicule Online|date= July 31, 2007|work=Washington Post|publisher=Associated Press|accessdate=2008-08-26]

Collins' sportscast was also featured on television and radio throughout the country and earned him an appearance on "The Late Show" (hosted by Ball State alumnus David Letterman). cite news|url=http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2005/06/13/earlyshow/leisure/celebspot/main701289.shtml|title=Phrase Originator Tells How It Happened, And About The Response|date=June 13, 2005 |publisher=CBS News|accessdate=2008-08-26]

The phrase was trademarked by a San Diego based speculator who offered it on t-shirts, saying that part of the proceeds would go to a scholarship fund at Ball State for journalism students.

ESPN SportsCenter anchor Scott Van Pelt e-mailed Collins words of encouragement and paid homage to him using the "boom" line on the air several times.
